Ángeles de la Muerte

Ángeles de la Muerte is a visualization of "a perfect humanitarian storm" of poverty, hyperinflation, malnutrition, AIDS, and cholera threatening Zimbabwe. The code to create the particles in the top 3/4 of the image uses emergent, swarming behaviors. The swarming code was a variation from Keith Peter's book, ActionScript 3.0 Animation. In this experiment, I am driving Maya with my custom application via a socket connection. The bottom 1/4 is a watercolor painting. Although the image captures the energy, it is not interactive, nor do the animated particles resonate with the emotional context.

BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe — There is a perfect humanitarian storm in my country. The threats of AIDS, poverty, hyperinflation and malnutrition, and now cholera, combined with a regime that has given up on its people, add up to an all-but-untenable state of affairs. It is difficult to know where to turn, but it is clear that under such a barrage, a haven must be found.

…while others awake
next to
ángeles de la muerte.

a random generator
that defines to whom
and where i am born
gives me the opportunities
to chase my dreams
but forces others to
live with their nightmares.
